Letter to the Editor, The Boston Globe:
Your coverage today (Aug 10th) on the main page of your website highlights a
huge difference in how car vs. car and car vs. cyclist crashes are
portrayed. Your coverage seems to skew towards “DRIVER HITS other
vehicle,” whereas “Cyclist IS STRUCK by VEHICLE.” The first example is an
active happening, by a PERSON in control of a vehicle, while the second
infers that the cyclist somehow got themselves into a position to be hit by
a random vehicle, regardless of the driver controlling it.
I’d ask that you pay attention to how these incidents (not accidents) are
portrayed, as it goes a long way towards how other people view cyclists,
and themselves as responsible drivers of cars, around cyclists and
pedestrians. Thank you.
